Spatial data infrastructure for climate change management in the vineyard

Adapting to climate change is the biggest challenge for the wine sector, assuming both a temporal and a spatial dimension. Each wine producing region consists of unique contexts (terroirs), so knowledge and understanding of contextual factors and their interaction with climate are essential to identify and prioritize temporal and spatial adaptation initiatives. Most of the information is linked to location, therefore the spatial (geographical) relevance and applicability of the spatially related and analyzed information is one of the main motivations of this project, as many of the variables that affect the quality of the grape are inherently spatial in nature. The INFRAVINI decision support platformwill include climatic and agronomic indicators, allowing winegrowers located in any area of any Wine Region to take advantage of the crossing and standardization of local sensory and forecast climate information collected in an “observatory” whose main function will be monitor both the impact of meteorological variability and the impact of climate change in certain territories.

The development of the INFRAVINI solution includes the use and adaptation of a Spatial Data Infrastructure, which makes it possible to gather thematic information from several sources, in an interoperable way, contributing to the creation of a standardized repository of geographic information.

In the pilot phase, the information collected exhaustively by ADVID (network of 21 reference plots, through the use of soil probes, sensors, meteorological stations, among others) will be crossed with spatially based climate information (factual and forecast), which the INFRAVINI platform will provide. The main objective of INFRAVINI is to make European wine industries resilient to climate change, minimizing costs and risks through improved management and monitoring of production.
